I've been a marriage and family therapist in private practice
for 20 years, and in that time I have worked with hundreds of
couples.
While a few couples come in very early when problems
first begin (this is a good thing) most couples arrive in my office
after experiencing lots of hurt and pain. I often find myself
wishing I could have gotten with a couple months or years earlier,
before all the painful patterns and experiences had drained the love
and closeness out of their relationship.
One of my
favorite stories is about a man walking along a river one day, who
hears someone yelling for help out in the river. He dives in and
brings the person to shore. No sooner had he got to shore, than
another person floats by yelling for help. The man jumps in and
saves him too. Then he rescues another one, and then another one,
and yet another one still. Exhausted, he begins to walk upriver,
while people are still floating by yelling for help. A bystander
asks him where he is going and why he is not continuing to rescue
those in the river.
The man replies-
"I'm going upstream to find out how they are all falling in and stop
it!"
That story
captures how I became a relationship coach. Trained in the largest
international organization of its kind,
The Relationship Coaching Institute,
my passion is to "go upstream" and help couples develop the skills
necessary to create, sustain and enjoy a passionate and loving
relationship.
